Garden of Life Raw B-Complex is a diet supplement containing group B vitamins, including vitamin B12 in its methylated form and folates; mixture of digestive enzymes, bacteria and probiotic yeast (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as well as vegetables and fruits originating form certified organic crops. This product is completely vegan.

Thiamine in the form of pyrophosphate (TPP) as a prosthetic enzyme group: pyruvate dehydrogenase, α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and transketolase, takes an active part in citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) which has an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fatty acids. That is why there is a bigger demand on vitamin B1 in high carbohydrate diet and why its deficiency leads to neurological disorders along with abnormal glucose concentration in the blood.

Riboflavin in the form of coenzymes: flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN), is a part of flavin enzymes. In this way, vitamin B2 participates in the oxidation and reduction processes in the organism that condition the metabolism of nutrients and energy production.

Riboflavin interacts with vitamin A, so that proper function of mucous membranes and skin are maintained. The standard symptom of riboflavin deficiency is cracking lisp and corners of the mouth as well as mucositis. The more serious effects of deficiency are the development of anemia and the reduction of heme (blood pigment) production.

Niacin in the coenzyme form: NAD and NADP, takes part in hydrogen atoms transfer in numerous metabolic processes, among others, tissue respiration and glycolysis. Vitamin B3 is necessary for the health of the nervous system - it is used in i. a. the treatment of schizophrenia. Additionally, it has antioxidative properties, increasing the activity of glutathione reductase. As a result, niacin supports the inactivation and excretion of xenobiotics (some drugs and toxins are coupled with glutathione) from the organism.

Pyridoxine, a.k.a vitamin B6, in active, coenzymatic phosphate forms is involved in i. a. the transformation of amino acids - decarboxylation reactions, racemization and others. Pyridoxine, by being involved in the antibodies formation, has a strengthening effect on the organism’s resistance. It is necessary for the synthesis of porphyrins, present, among others, in hemoglobin, and its deficiency leads to the development of non-pigmented anemia. Faster aging of neurons is yet another effect of vitamin B6 deficiency.

Folates play a number of important functions in the organism. First of all, they are necessary for proper cell division, since they are transferring one-carbon fragments for the synthesis and methylation of RNA and DNA, therefore the proper level of folates in intensely dividing tissues is especially crucial. This holds true also for the developing fetus that is why, they should be obligatory supplemented by pregnant women and those who are planning pregnancy.

Folates participate in the transformation of amino acids, including homocysteine, leading to a decrease in its level. Lowering the homocysteine level is a desirable activity from the prevention of civilization diseases point of view, especially of the circulatory system. Folate deficiency contributes to abnormal cell division, development of anemia and depression.

Methylcobalamin is a bioactive form of vitamin B12, naturally occurring in the organism. Vitamin B12 is necessary for every cell of the body, since it participates in methylation reactions (like folates). With the cooperation of vitamin B12, homocysteine is remethylated to methionine. It is also crucial for the proper erythrocytes formation. Its deficiency leads to the development of megaloblastic anemia. Vitamin B12 has a significant importance from the health of the nervous system point of view, due to its contribution to the formation of myelin sheaths.

Biotin, also called vitamin B7, as a coenzyme is an essential element of some of the carboxylic acid enzymes, i. a. acetyl-CoA carboxylase and pyruvate carboxylase. Carboxylases are conditioning several important metabolic changes, including gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis.

Biotin has a beneficial effect on the appearance of the skin and hair. This effect is possible due to the presence of sulfur in the biotin molecule. Vitamin B7 supports the production processes of keratin, the proteins of which contain large amounts of sulfuric amino acids. Biotin is involved also in the processes of skin cell differentiation and building hair and nails. Biotin deficiency is manifested by skin inflammation, excessive brittleness of the hair and nails and disorders of fat metabolism.

Pantothenic acid in the form of coenzyme A (CoA) is necessary for the proper metabolism of fatty acids, synthesis of certain neurotransmitters and hormones. Vitamin B5 effectively supports the organism's antioxidative barrier - it leads to an increase in the glutathione level and, according to studies performed on an animal model, it can inhibit lipid peroxidation processes.

The mixture of organic vegetables and fruits provides a wealth of health-promoting phytochemicals - pofilenols, most of all flavonoids. Flavonoids are a group of compounds with scientifically proven antioxidative properties that strengthen the vascular endothelium, as well as anti-aggregating, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. They exhibit a synergy of action with vitamin C.

Bacteria and probiotic yeast - Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae support the normalization of intestinal bacterial microflora. They inhibit the colonization and survival of pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, beneficially influence the organism’s immunity and digestive comfort. Intestinal balance is also important from the reduction of mood disorders and depression point of view.

Digestive enzymes support the function of natural enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating and improving digestive processes. Properly digested food has a positive influence on the state of bacterial microflora and is easily absorbed by the organism. Taking digestive enzymes along with a meal will result in most benefits - protection against the feeling of heaviness and digestive discomfort. Digestive enzymes might also be helpful in alleviating food intolerances.

To sum up, Garden of Life Raw B-Complex is a complicated diet supplement recommended for complementing the diet with group B vitamins, especially for people leading active and stressful lifestyle and/or performing mental work, in order to improve the cognitive functions, as well as in the case of vegan diet as a health prophylaxis.
