Lysine is a protein amino acid belonging to the group of essential amino acids. It is the building block of many important proteins; it participates in the synthesis of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies, as well as it affects the collagen production. In addition, it strengthens the immune response, displays antimicrobial properties, alleviates cold symptoms and combats herpes virus. The best natural source of lysine is zoonotic products, i.e. meat, eggs, milk. People who consciously abandon them are particularly vulnerable to lysine deficiency and should consider including it in a diet in the form of a supplement.

Lysine supplementation is popular among athletes. Studies show that lysine may stimulate the production of growth hormone (GH), which results in an improved regeneration and faster development of muscle mass. In addition, it has a beneficial effect on the musculoskeletal system. Owing to the participation in the collagen synthesis, lysine strengthens the connective tissue, and by improving calcium absorption it also increases bone strength. Lysine deficiencies may potentially slow down the post-workout biological recovery of the body and increase the risk of injuries to the musculoskeletal system.

Lysine supplements are helpful in case of HSV infection. The research results indicate that lysine can shorten the duration of active herpes by up to two weeks. Lysine is also effective in case of flu and cold – it alleviates their symptoms and contributes to faster recovery.
