Jarrow MSM 1000 mg is a dietary supplement with methylsulfonylmethane, a compound with bioavailable sulphur which is used in the form of thiol groups for the synthesis of such substances as collagen, glutathione and also enzymes and antibodies.
Methylsulfonylmethane is a chemical compound which belongs to hydrocarbon derivatives with a sulphuric acid (VI) group. This compound is not synthesised naturally in the human body. Nonetheless, it is found commonly in primitive plants which are a part of our diet.
MSM and its derivatives are absorbed quickly in the intestines and then reach the liver (derivatives, e.g. DMSO, are converted there into MSM) and pass via the bloodstream to target tissues. MSM is often excreted in an unchanged form through the kidneys.
Mechanism of action
It is postulated that MSM shows several mechanisms of action. One of these is the inhibition of inflammation which is associated the inhibition of the activity of nuclear factor (NF-κB) and thus leads to a decrease in levels of proinflammatory cytokines – IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α. The inhibition may involve inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS, found in immunocompetent cells and involved in free radical generation and mastocyte activation), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), responsible for the production of inflammatory prostaglandins.
MSM is classified as an antioxidant, which coincides with its anti-inflammatory effects in molecular mechanisms. However, it contributes also to the activation of such proteins as p53 (the so-called guardian of the genome), JAK kinases and STAT proteins (which help hormones to work), Nrf-2, which contributes consequently to a reduction in the formation of harmful free radicals.
A decrease in concentrations of these mediators, whose presence is critical to increased production of free radicals and induction of inflammation, accounts for immunomodulatory properties of methylsulfonylmethane because it prevents overactivity of the immune system. The supplementation with this compound may help relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies which develop due to immunodeficiency.
Impact on the functioning of organs
Many diseases involves inflammation, an innate immune response. This refers also to degenerative joint disease in which continuous destructive mechanical forces stimulate the activity of cells which resorb components of bone matrix. They secrete inflammatory mediators, proteolytic enzymes and free radicals which may lead in a longer term to the progression of changes. Studies demonstrate that MSM supplementation reduces inflammation and thus slows down the progression of degenerative disease.
It is important for athletes that methylsulfonylmethane has been shown to improve significantly the functioning of the locomotor system. The degeneration of joint elements does not only affect the elderly but also individuals in the prime of their life who are active in sport. Intense physical activity causes also microinjuries in muscles that are manifested by pain and discomfort. It has been shown that MSM reduces these negative effects and helps therefore to improve your training effectiveness.
MSM seems also to be helpful in such conditions as colitis and lung, liver or urinary bladder damage. Owing to antioxidant properties, it leads to the inhibition of cancerous changes. It has been also observed to improve skin quality.
To sum up, Jarrow MSM 1000 mg is a supplement designed for active persons who do sport and also those who want to maintain healthy joints. Methylsulfonylmethane protects effectively the locomotor system against degenerative processes. What is more, the formula of plant origin in a capsule has been designed for vegetarians in mind.
