L-ornithine L-aspartate (LOLA) is a combination of two amino acids: ornithine and l-aspartic acid. Both amino acids are involved in the urea cycle, also known as the ornithine cycle or the Krebs urea cycle.
The urea cycle is the main metabolic pathway where ammonia is broken down and converted to urea. In this process, ammonia is converted into various amino acids and finally into urea, which is removed from the body through urine and also to a small extent through sweat. All these ammonia conversions require the presence of two amino acids: ornithine and aspartate, as well as cellular energy in the form of ATP. If the body lacks ornithine or aspartate, it can make it difficult to convert ammonia in the urea cycle. Too high levels of toxic ammonia can lead to serious liver damage, so it is important to maintain high efficiency of its utilization process.
