Swanson Fenugreek Seeds is a supplement containing the extract from fenugreek seeds. Fenugreek is traditionally associated with cooking art and in many countries it is commonly used as seasoning. However, the richness of the pharmacologically active compounds and wide spectrum of pro-health properties make fenugreek a valuable herb therapeutic product.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum – graecum L.), also called Greek clover is a popular green plant from bean family. It naturally overgrows the region of the Mediterranean Sea, but it is also cultivated in Europe and Asia. It is valued as seasoning and because of the high content of proteins, vitamins and minerals it is also used as a component of pasture. Complex chemical content allows to use fenugreek also in therapy and prevention of many ailments.

Fenugreek constitutes a real mine of well assimilable proteins, vitamins (B1, B3, F and H) and bioelements (calcium, iron, potassium, fluorine). Moreover, from its seeds the groups of flavonoids, steroid saponins, phospholipids, phytosterols and coumarins were isolated.

Support for the liver and digestive system
Fenugreek has hepatoprotective properties and contributes to regulating the level of liver markers (ALAT, ASPAT, bilirubin). The compounds contained in its seeds reduce lipid peroxidation and activate antioxidant enzymes in liver cells. Fenugreek extracts demonstrate the effectiveness comparable to sylimarin.

Fenugreek may be used in therapy of many ailments of the digestive system (gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, bacterial infections). It protects gastric mucosa, regulates gastric juice and pepsins secretion, has bactericidal effect as for the bacteria strains responsible for the diseases of the digestive system (E. coli, Salmonella typhi).

Lipid parameters improvement
Fenugreek is recommended to lower excessively high cholesterol level. Under the influence of steroid saponins contained in the seeds, it accelerates cholesterol metabolism, its transformation to bile acids taking place in the liver and its excretion from the organism. Moreover, lipase activity is slowed down, fatty compounds absorption is delayed and accumulation of fat in cells is blocked. By the same token, the level of triglycerides and low density lipoproteins (LDL) is lowered, i.e. the unbeneficial cholesterol fraction.

Lipid metabolism is also improved by niacin, abundantly contained in fenugreek. Research showed that taking solely vitamin B3 results in the decrease of LDL fraction and increase of the beneficial HDL fraction. Some studies suggest that coumarins contained in fenugreek prevent platelets aggregation, which is important in cardiovascular system diseases prevention.

Sugar balance regulation
Synergistic effect of the compounds contained in fenugreek seeds is responsible for its hypoglycemic properties. Fenugreek regulates the activity of a few enzyme groups (lipogenic, glycolytic and gluconeogenic), thanks to which it helps to reduce excessively high glucose level in blood. Additionally, 4-hydroxisoleucin contained in fenugreek seeds stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic islets, while polyphenols increase general insulin sensitivity. Importantly, the effects of fenugreek are dependent on glucose concentration in blood and appear only in the case of its increased level.

Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties
Anti-inflammatory effects of fenugreek are comparable to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Seed extracts stimulate anti-inflammatory cytokines secretion IL-6 and IL-10 as well as TNF (tumor necrosis factor) and intensify induced cyclooxygenase expression (COX-2). Thanks to this, fenugreek effectively inhibits inflammations and moreover, it demonstrates antifebrile and analgesic effects.

Phenol compounds contained in fenugreek inhibit the expression of reactive oxygen forms from the organism tissues involved in the inflammation and additionally they remove peroxyl radicals. Antioxidant effect is also demonstrated by many other compounds present in fenugreek seeds, which provide this plant with huge potential to fight with ailments caused by the excess of free radicals in the organism.

Fenugreek works like a natural antibiotic. It inhibits the development of 26 different pathogenic microorganisms from Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria kind and fungi.

Anabolic effect
There are certain premises allowing to consider fenugreek as an effective product with anabolic effect. Steroid saponins contained in its composition initiate anabolic hormones synthesis (testosterone, DHEA) and influence secretion of releasing hormones. Moreover, fenugreek intensifies adrenal cortex hormone synthesis, stimulates the synthesis of muscle tissue proteins and contributes to increasing nitrogen retention in the organism. All of this stimulates myogenic processes and may result in the increase of lean body mass.

Lactogenic effect
In folk medicine, fenugreek traditionally has been recommended to young mothers as a herb intensifying lactation. Diosgenin and phytoestrogens contained in it are similar in structure to natural estrogen and may influence endocrinal system and increase milk letdown.

Fenugreek is a herb supplement recommended to strengthen the organism. It will work well in the states of physical and mental weakness or in the period of recuperation. It contains only natural ingredients, whose effectiveness and safety of use were confirmed by clinical research.
