Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a vitamin which functions as a prohormone. It may be synthesised from provitamin D in the dermis and epidermis. However, this process requires adequate exposure of the skin to UVB-radiation. Due to our current lifestyle, exposure to sun rays is insufficient, which is usually the cause of common vitamin D3 deficiency.

Vitamin D3 is critical to normal bone mineralisation by maintaining calcium-phosphate balance.
