Alpha-yohimbine, also known as rauwolscine or isoyohimbine, is an indole alkaloid found in Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe) and plants belonging to the genus Rauwolfia. It is a diastereoisomer of yohimbine, from which it practically doesn't differ in its mechanism of action. It may even give slightly better results than yohimbine or yohimbine hydrochloride.
Alpha-yohimbine strongly stimulates the central nervous system. It is an antagonist of alpha-2-adrenergic receptors, thus causing increased secretion of norepinephrine. Increased norepinephrine levels translate into significant stimulation of the nervous system. Compared to yohimbine, rauwolscine appears to be less selective for alpha-2 receptors, suggesting that it may act more potently.
Alpha-yohimbine has several potential uses. It helps reduction of the excessive fat tissue and is particularly effective on the areas most difficult to slim (abdomen, thighs, buttocks). In addition, it is a powerful and popular aphrodisiac. It also has an energizing effect, so it works well before a workout as a stimulating substance that improves exercise capacity.
