Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is a plant used in Oriental and Ayurvedic medicine, cultivated broadly in East Asia, China and some parts of Europe. It is also known as King of Bitters or Nilavempu. In traditional medicine, roots and aerial parts of Andrographis were used to, among others, eliminate toxins, prevent colds, infections and fever and also as an antidote for snake and insect venom.

According to available studies, conducted mainly by Asian scientists and based on reports from Ayurvedic doctors, it has been shown that the plant has a wide spectrum of biological properties, mainly due to the content of andrographolides – diterpenes and flavonoids. Andrographis has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antiparasitic and antibacterial effects. Furthermore, it helps fight colds (reduces its symptoms), sore throat, tonsilitis and sinus infection.

It has been demonstrated that supplementing with Andrographis extract may have a beneficial effect on digestive processes and support liver function and regeneration (its hepatoprotective effects are comparable to the ones of silymarin).
