Garden agelica (Archangelica officinalis) is a biennial plant, of European climate (in Poland can be found in mountainous areas) belonging to Umbelliferae family, reaching a height of approx. 1.5 - 2 m, with beautiful leaves and large umbels, with a specific strong smell. In households is used as a spice (root and fruit), petioles of leaves and umbels (the production of jam), the root in the production of tinctures. Garden angelica root is used as a medicinal raw material containing, sugars, essential oils (felandren, pinene, terpenes), coumarin derivatives, flavonoids, phytosterols, tannins, organic acids (such as coffee, chlorogenic, angelic), pectin and resins. Preparations containing angelica root are expectorant, tonic, antispasmodic, choleretic, carminative and diuretic. They are used in digestive disorders, flatulence and indigestion, nervous disorders of appetite and persistent headaches. Products with root of garden angelica are not recommended for women during menstruation and pregnancy.
Note: Do not confuse garden angelica (Achangelica officinalis) with wild angelica (Angelica silvestris) and Angelica litoralis.
