Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is a common weed growing in the northern hemisphere. Medicinally are used the leaves (Folium Farfarae) and flowers of coltsfoot (Flos Farfarae), containing the active ingredients acting protectively, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and relieving cough. Flower contains: an essential oil, in the amount higher than in leaves, but it contains less of the gentian and mucus, moreover, a routine, carotenoids and sugars. The leaves are rich in mucus (approx. 8%), phytosterols, flavonoids, tannins, organic acids, choline and minerals (especially zinc), trace amounts of essential oils. The substances of coltsfoot are often components of herbal blends of multidirectional action, especially recommended for the treatment of catarrh of the respiratory tract of children and adolescents, and adults (including heavy smokers of tobacco).
