The coumarins are phytochemicals, may occur in free or bound form (As glycosides). They have antibacterial, analgesic, antifungal, antispasmodic (sweet clover herb and herniaria), anticoagulation and calming effect. Some compounds of coumarin (furanocoumarins) sensitize the skin to the rays of the sun (preparation of angelica root). There has also been reported the influence of coumarin compounds for the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. pimpinella root), stimulating digestion (preparations of angelica), spasms of smooth muscle organs (rue herb). With herbal treatment containing coumarin, recommendations of doses should be followed, because of the toxicity of these compounds, which can be revealed by poisoning.
