Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) - belongs to the group of essential unsaturated fatty acids, the family omega-6. It is naturally produced in the organism by means of conversion from eicosapentaenoic acid to docosahexaenoic acid. Similarly to the remaining fatty acids belonging to EFAs, DPA is associated with the prophylaxis of cardiovascular system diseases.

Supplementation with docosapentaenoic acid is recommended also due to its beneficial influence on the functions of the nervous system. It is conducive to maintaining high efficiency of cognitive functions and it may also have neuroprotective effect, limiting the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases.

Among other essential unsaturated fatty acids, DPA is distinguished by high ability to prevent the development of prostate cancer. It is indicated that it is active even in already sick people, limiting the level of cancer expansion.

Some sources also say that supplementation with docosapentaenoic acid may be conducive to maintaining healthy, nourished skin and delay visible signs of aging.
