Fluorine - an element of halogens, in free state poisonous, greenish irritating gas with a strong odor. It is one of the most active elements binding with almost all elements. In food it is found in trace amounts (eg. in liver and fish, and foods such as dairy products, soybeans, leafy vegetables, cereals and potatoes). The main source of acquisition of fluorine is water filtered with fluoride and some mineral waters.
Fluorine is an important component of bones and teeth, where it is stored in the form of fluoroapatite. Deficiency of fluorine causes tooth decay and weakening of bone tissue. Excess fluoride can lead to damage to the enamel and permanent changes in bone (fluorosis). It is a component of herbal extracts based on green tea. Widely used in toothpastes. As the prevention of children and adolescents – fluoridation of teeth is used.
