Gastric mucin is a kind of glycoprotein of high molecular weight which is present in the surface area of the mucous membrane and is a component of most secretions produced in the body. It can be found e.g. in the saliva and bile. Mucin has a unique molecular structure and distinctive chemical properties. It is capable of absorbing large amounts of water and easily forms gels.

They are basically two types of mucin in the stomach – MUC5AC and MUC6. They are produced by epithelial cells of gastric glands and surface mucous cells. Studies have shown that gastric mucins have a key role in the protection of gastric epithelium from colonisation by pathogenic microorganisms, including the bacteria Helicobacter pyroli.

Gastric mucin is usually found in supplements aimed at supporting a healthy stomach and fighting Helicobacter pyroli infection.
