Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), also known as Amrita or Giloya, is a vine species of the family Menispermaceae. Guduchi is found naturally in India, Bangladesh and Sri-Lanka and is used mainly in Ayurvedic medicine.

The plant is a source of many substances, including alkaloids, diterpene lactones, glycosides, steroids, sesquiterpenes and polysaccharides. Owing to them, it can show a wide range of health benefits.

Guduchi attracts great interest among scientist worldwide, among others, due to its antidiabetic (supports pancreatic function and helps maintain normal glucose levels), anti-inflammatory (supports the body’s natural immunity), antiarthritic (promotes healthy joints), anti-allergic (reduces symptoms of allergy) and nephro- and hepatoprotective properties (improves the body’s detoxification).

In addition, guduchi exerts an anti-stress effect and that is why it is classed among adaptogens – substances which encourage the body’s adaptive mechanisms in response to stress. It influences also beneficially the function of the brain and nerve cells, thereby promoting general mental well-being.

Dietary supplements contain mainly the extract from stems, root and leaves of guduchi. Formulas based on this raw material are recommended as a general preventive measure and to support the body, e.g. during exposure to stress, immunodeficiency, carbohydrate imbalance and problems with memory and focus.
